Steve, the 96-well magnetic separator

A magnetic separator for standard 96-well PCR plates (no-skirted and semi-skirted)

Steve with 2 mm magnets in vertical position
Magnets can be oriented vertically (only possible with 2 mm magnets)
(Tools are continuously optimized. Therefore pictures may differ slightly)

Options for customization

  • Position of magnets in millimeters up from the bottom of the tubes.
At standard position, beads will be pulled around 3 mm up from the bottom of the tubes, convenient for volumes from 15 to 250 ul.
  • Types of magnets (height of magnets is 4 mm for both types):
    1. 40 x 1.7 kg = 68 kg total, 3 mm thick (obsolete)
    2. 24 x 2 kg = 48 kg total, 2 mm thick
  • Orientation of magnets: Horizontal or vertical (only possible with 2 mm magnets)
  • Plate type: there is no version for low profile/full-skirted plates, but if you’re interested in that, let me know!

After extensive use of “Steve” for many different protocols (mostly library preps) I personally prefer the version “2 mm magnets, 3.5 mm up from bottom”, in

–  horizontal orientation of the magnets when used with liquid handling stations

–  vertical orientation for pipetting by hand

Technical specification

  • Dimensions of the footprint: 127.8 x 85.5 mm (ANSI:SBS footprint, compatible for pipetting robots)
  • Neodymium magnets with Nickel coating
  • Printed with a SLA technology with very high resolution
  • Comes in clear, robust material
  • Not fully ethanol resistant. If surface sterilization is needed, please use bleach or UV sterilization.
